“Move the Box,” is one of the new puzzle apps on iOS and Android. This application brings forward a new genre of puzzles, which offers very limited moves. It is a smart app similar to Angry Birds and it requires attention as it really puts your mind to work.

As the name of the app suggests, the task is to move the boxes in a limited number of moves which if done correctly makes them disappear. Typically the player has 1 to 3 moves for every challenge. If the player uses more moves, he has to play again till he can figure out how to finish without using extra moves. The app continues with several new levels, each level getting tougher than the previous one.

Since each level has a different set of boxes that need a new strategy, the app does become very challenging and tiresome at times. To help at those points, the application offers hints, which can be obtained by either paying or by writing a review. This app has a very smart marketing strategy. By offering hints as bait, many users have already written a review. Even if it is a line, it is a proof of the apps success. While reviewing can get 5 hints for different levels, it is essential that the player saves those hints for the extremely difficult levels.

If nothing else works, it’s always best to do some brainstorming and randomly move boxes to get clues for the right strategy.

All in all this is a fun puzzle game, perfect to play while waiting at the doctor’s office or in long lines.

Crackberry Quick Review: Photo Editor Extreme by Pepper.pk – 25 copies to be won

I use my BlackBerry often to snap pictures day to day. I wouldn’t call myself a photographer but I like to snap photos of my cats and anything interesting that catches my eye. I also like to try out photo editing apps. Whlie there are many to be found within App World, only a few stay on my device. One photo editing app I have found to be a favourite of mine is the popular photo editing app from Pepper.pk. The Photo Editor app has updated recently and has been improved to given a new name too. The update brings us to version 3 and is now called Photo Editor Extreme. It brings with it a few new features including Doodle and BBM integration.

The Review

When you load the app you are given the option to select a photo, so no camera shots direct from the app. However, this isn’t a huge problem. Once you have chosen the photo you want to edit you are then presented with the tools you need to edit your photo. There are lots of tools to choose fro – adjusting the brightness/contrast, saturation and hue, resize, sharpen, auto correct, blur, recolour, you can even add filters, frames, shapes, text and doodle. While many photo editing apps can do these things I find that Photo Editor Extreme does it quite well and it doesn’t take too long to render the filters.

There is certainly plenty to choose from and you can have a bit of fun with them. You also have the ability to add frames to your photos, however, I do feel that there is a lack of choices here and they could be improved on a bit too.

The Doodle feature is quite fun too, especially if you have an awesome photo to doodle on. What I like about the Doodle feature is that it is quite response on my Bold 9900, I have found other apps that don’t do this quite well, so props to Pepper.pk there. One thing I would like to see though, is the ability to change the size of the paint brush or pen tool. Both the pen tool and line tool are very thin and is hard to see at times, being able to change the size would a cool option. So, would being able to change the text size in the text tool too. It comes out very small and can get lost in the photo.

Along the top of the screen you have options to share your newly edited photo to Facebook, Twitter, BBM and Email. You can also crop, rotate or flip your photo too. There is the option to undo and edit you don’t like, however, the undo option on undos the last step, so if you wanted to undo a few steps out of luck. When doodling I have found that I have wanted to undo more steps but could not so I had to just close the app and start again. So, that could be another thing to add in the future perhaps.

Overall, the app is pretty solid. It is one of the better photo editing apps I have come across and certainly worth its price tag. There is also a PlayBook version too.

Smartphones and Tablets have not only brought the world to the palm of our hands, they have also introduced us to apps and word games that all of us had played in different forms during our childhood. From Scrabble to Tetris we have all played these games at one point or another. Pepper.pk continues to surprise users with intelligent twists to these games and comes up with games that we all love.

Word Target gives the players a set of 6 alphabets and 3 minutes. The task is to make as many words as possible from those few letters in that much time. The alphabets don’t change; hence the player has all the time to concentrate on those few letters. Of course the bigger the word, the more points you get. You can make as many as 3, 4, 5, and even 6 letter words from the combination available. 3 letter words increase your points by 30 and time by 3 seconds. 4 and 5 letter words also increase points in the same manner. You will soon realize that it is not a hard task at all to score high quickly.

Another app developed by Pepper.pk, named Skitrix is an extremely challenging app that challenges us to make words from falling blocks. While amateurs struggle more with Skitrix, I recommend Word Target which is the right choice if you are looking for something easier to get started. In Word Target too the mission is to make words with a few letters, however, it does not swamp your screen with letters that you don’t have control over after some time. So, having the luxury of concentrating on a few letters, one at a time is blissful for beginners like me. Also the number of words you can make with a few given letters will surprise you. The curiosity to see all the possible combinations to make a word is sure to keep you glued to the app for some time.

Why play “Words with Friends?”

After getting acknowledgment for developing Farmville, Zynga has continued to climb the ladder by creating many more iOS apps- all of them making a good score in the market.” Words with Friends” is yet another app that has gotten many app and scrabble lovers glued to their iPhones again. This app is clearly a modern version of scrabble. Some have apprehensions accepting the changes, while many have already become devoted to the unique alterations.
The older version of words with friends was free, but as many pointed out the advertisement and bugs in the app made it less exciting. One of the most prominent problems in Zynga free games is the constant ads and banners, that tend to ruin your mood even when you are winning. Hence, the new paid “Words with Friends” app continues to be the same app but without the advertisements and the banners.
Like the original scrabble you get 7 letters to make a word in a horizontal or a vertical line. The scoreboard is slightly different than the usual one. You can search for a random opponent, ask a friend for their username, or simply sync with your Facebook which allows you to play with all your friends. “Words with Friends”, allows you to shuffle the tiles in your rack as many times as you want. If you don’t like your tiles you can even exchange them with your opponent, but in return you lose your turn. After playing a word, you tap on “play” and the person you are playing with is notified. While you are playing your turn, you even have the option of chatting, whether it’s a random opponent or a friend. If your friend takes too long to respond or disappears, you can start another game while still running the previous games.
“Words with Friends” has taken a new approach to scrabble. Without losing any scrabble letters now you can conveniently play at your own pace. You can play your turn whenever you want without losing your previous scores. As soon as your opponent plays their move, you get a notification on your iPhone reminding you that it’s your turn. However, on the other side there are a few very noticeable drawbacks in this app too. There is no tab that allows you to see previous moves. Every time you put your letters together to make a word, you don’t know how much you will score till you play it. Unfortunately for an amateur like me, when my math skills and vocabulary were put to test together, it took several attempts to reach a decent score.
Unlike Scrabble, this app allows you to score really high when you make big words. Yes, everyone can cheat no matter how honestly they want to play it. For example if you create a word that doesn’t exist in the dictionary, it will not accept your word. Clearly, the score can rise within a few turns. I do believe that like all word games this one too plays a big role in increasing vocabulary. Like always, it’s a great app for grownups and children who learn a lot more while taking fun challenges.

The Skitrix Phenomenon

Ninja Fruit Bash slicing its way to victory

This app has already made headlines and many Blackberry app lovers seem to have already taken the challenge to save China from the evil spirit of Orochi. For users who are still new to it, here is a brief description. Ninja Fruit Bash is based on a ninjas’ quest that travels across China to slice all the poisoned and tainted fruits. The ultimate mission is to save humanity from the fruits poisoned by the evil spirit of Orochi which are fatal if swallowed. Orochi has plagued all the fertile fruit gardens across China and it is up to the ninja to battle the plague.
The task is rather simple. You play the role of the ninja and with a simple swipe of your finger tip across the screen; you try to split as many poisonous fruits as possible. The app begins slowly with only a few fruits in the beginning. Before you know it, your screen is swarming with more fruits, sometimes five to six at one time. The mission gets tougher as you attempt to slice more fruits in a matter of seconds. The surge to splish-splash more fruit can prove fatal if you mistake a bomb for a fruit. Be careful to let it fall its way because slicing that will cause you to lose the game immediately. The seemingly gory app fortunately does not smear your screen with any blood splashes, rather fruit juices which is a feeling players begin to relish.
This journey through 10 provinces across China is a task any player will feel is crucial to finish and sense restoration. While finishing all the levels is a challenge not many are able to accomplish, it does promise to keep you addicted. Todays’ app review is centered on a Facebook app which has now found its way to iOS. “Family feud and friends” is a game appearing like a game show with 3 rounds of survey questions. The top answers are hidden and revealed as you begin to guess the correct ones. The answers are based on what a 100 average people have answered. At the beginning it allows you to spin the jackpot and win up to 9 coins so you can start playing. You get free coins on a daily basis and you can earn more coins by inviting friends to play with you. You also get the option to buy more coins with real money. While playing you can choose to connect through your Facebook account and play with you friends from there. You also have the option to play as a stranger with strangers.

The game requires only 2 coins to get started. This app has a fun TV show sense to it making you feel like you are playing for real money. You play against another player in the first three rounds. Points are doubled in Round 2 and tripled in Round 3. If you make it to the 3^rd round you play “fast money,” and earn up 200 points. In this round you don’t have a competitor. The task is to answer five questions and give the most accurate answers as soon as possible. If you collect the most number of points in the given time you reach the next level.

While the app appears to be rather fascinating one might compare it to word games and muse if this might be adding to our knowledge. However, it actually doesn’t. There isn’t much the player learns from the app except what were the top 100 answers that majority of the people answered in surveys. The good thing is, you are gaining general knowledge end of the day and since it’s free it is always worth a try. Also, while typing the keywords the app lists down the closest possible answers you might be searching for. Hence, those poor at typing skills like me cannot give this as an excuse to justify a bad score.

Dokobots or just Robots?

Dokobots, is a new iPhone app which starts off in a rather fascinating manner. The user is first introduced to the history of dokobots that are aliens in need of help from humans. They are inactive and need batteries to get charged. The app helps you make your dokobot active and green in color. You can give your dokobot a name and a function, choosing from options like “hopeless romantic.” The app gives you a virtual map of your actual location and shows you objects like robots and batteries that you can pick. The player is provided with the option to search for batteries and other dokobots in the area and then pull them closer through a magnet. The app appears to be rather interesting and gives you the chance to build a life for your dokobot, so much so it even give it the opportunity to take a vacation.

However, as independent as the dokobots appear to be, any player will realize in half an hour or less that there are too many boundaries for this seemingly independent dokobot as well. While you remain in the same location, you will remain pretty far from all batteries and other abandoned dokobots unless you physically move in the direction of the batteries. Trying to bring them closer through the magnets takes too much time and the wait feels rather tiresome after a while. Another disadvantage is that I may have more dokobots in my room but they will not be visible to each other. This app could have a lot more potential if the dokobots are given more features and given the ability to interact with each other. Giving dokobots names and jobs in words is not enough to personify them, hence more is required from this app to keep the interest.
